UNVEILING PRODUCTION SPACES OF UMURBEY REAR-PORT REGION

Umurbey district in Izmir, located both close to the central city and the port, unveils the political, economic and social context in the light of its critical historiographic importance as well as emerging urban issues – such as urban gentrification. At Umurbey, first of all, the industrial, architectural and cultural heritage dating back to the beginning of 19th century; secondly, the physical and social value of neighbourhood including distinguished examples of civil architecture, and thirdly, the inhabitants with strong social memory, the craftsmen and other urban actors indicating distinctive production activities have made the neighbourhood significant in the city of Izmir. With the walk through the streets of Umurbey, we aim to share and discuss multiple dimensions of the district while visiting the spaces of various productions of today and in the history, within the guidance of Çiçek Ş. Tezer Yıldız, the PhD. Candidate from Izmir Institute of Technology Department of Architecture and co-founder of NomadMind.
